"CRISPY" DARTH VADER

Nick and Brian Wolfe of Wolfe Brothers Face Art and FX asked me a few month prior to Dragon-Con 2006 if I would like to do a burnt version of Darth Vader as he appeared before donning his helmet in Episode III, of course I jumped at the opportunity to do something different with my costume and still remain true to the Star Wars Trilogy. I spent about 2 hours with them getting into the make up and prosthetics.

Below you will see pics of the entire process...

STEP 1

First came the bald cap, and the glue....

STEP 2

more glue and a common glue stick to cover my eyebrows...

STEP 3

next a special mixture of paint and silicone...

STEP 4

more silicone for the melting effect...

STEP 5

even more silicone...

STEP 6

This stuff makes my nose look HUGE!!!

STEP 7

now comes the blood.
They start by doing layers of effects and paint some of this will not even show but it gives the proper color to the other layers...

STEP 8

still more blood and amazing detail...

STEP 9

more colors to give the layers more realism...

STEP 10

still more colors...

STEP 11

airbrush paint work now. This actually felt kinda cool...

STEP 12

after the paint and a few touch-ups here is the final product about 2 hours later...

Great job guys!

STEP 13

final step was to insert the "sith" contact lenses.

I had never worn contacts before and have a prosthetic right eye. I had spoken to my ocurolist prior to doing this about wearing contacts or having another eye made to match and she informed me that I could wear contacts over my eye. It took me about 10 minutes to get used to having the one in my left eye, but the right was cool from the start.

FINAL PRODUCT WITH COSTUME

Special thanks to Nick and Brian for all their hard work. I stayed in this costume for almost 8 hours on Sunday at Dragon-Con 2006. Since it was a one time make up effect I tried to get as much use out of it as possible before I had to remove it. I had a blast with it and would love to do it again some time.

Even good friend Dave Prowse loved it.
